The lazy cake, commonly known as tinginys, is perfect for those who have a sweet tooth but lack the desire to spend hours in the kitchen making something. This beloved Lithuanian dessert is a no-bake cake made with just four basic ingredients. You may prepare a delectable dessert that will wow both your taste buds and your guests in just a few simple steps.
What is Lazy Cake?
Eastern Europe has long enjoyed the popular treat known as lazy cake, or tinginys in Lithuanian. In fact, the word “tinginys” means “lazy” in English, which perfectly sums up the spirit of this dish. It is a cake that involves little work but has a lot of flavor.
Ingredients for the Lazy Cake
Simplicity is crucial while making a lazy cake. The 4 necessary elements are as follows:
Tea or vanilla cookies: The biscuits are the base of the lazy cake. We use “Gaidelis” biscuits in Lithuania, which have butter and vanilla flavors. Their mild sweetness and delicate texture are the ideal complements to the other ingredients.
Cocoa powder: You’ll need cocoa powder to give the cake a rich chocolate flavor. Usually I use 50% cacao, but for a stronger flavor you can use 70% cacao. Just be aware that foods with higher cacao content could taste a little bit bitter.
Sweetened condensed milk: The essential ingredient that brings everything together in the lazy cake is sweetened condensed milk. It not only adds a delightful milky flavor but also acts as a binding agent, ensuring the biscuits hold their shape.
Butter: use unsalted butter.
Optional additions: You can customize the lazy cake by adding dark or milk chocolate. You can incorporate it into the cake or create a chocolate layer on the top. Just remember, the cake is already sweet without the extra chocolate, so it’s entirely your choice.
Storing and freezing
Storing: place it in an airtight container or wrap in the plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 3 days.
Freezing (optional): you can freeze it, but it wonβt be as tasty as the fresh one π Yet if you want, you can wrap the cake tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container, then store it in the freezer for up to a month.
